Having a problem with Maps[edit]

I asked this at WP:EAR but a more general audience might be able to help. I am having problems adding a map on Mount Carmel East. I'm writing it out: | map_type = Columbus#Ohio#USA | relief = 1 | map_size = 225 | Coordinates = {{coord|39.583700|82.503520|format=dms|display=inline,title|type:landmark_region:US-OH}} The error I get is "Lua error in Module:Location_map at line 469: Unable to find the specified location map definition. Neither "Module:Location map/data/Columbus" nor "Template:Location map Columbus" exists.". I would try to work around this by using an OpenStreetMap but I can't seem to find one already uploaded for Ohio let alone Columbus. So I don't know how to work around this problem. I have added the Ohio locator map, and corrected your coordinates as the ones above point to China. There is an OSM map of Columbus File:Map Columbus (Ohio).jpg, but only the French have a locator template for it. We don't normally ban someone for a single comment in an article, but advise them on their talk page that such edits are inappropriate. Perhaps you could do that? Dbfirs 09:51, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

Copyright material[edit]

Looking through the Amina Figarova article I noticed that the main part of the text is just copied from this source: . What must be done is such case? Is it the situation, when copying is allowed? Lidiia Kondratieva (talk) 12:06, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

The identical text was added by User:Bartamina in [1] 20 January 2014. The user has only edited that article. Amina's husband is called Bart so it may have been him. The Internet Archive shows that added the text after Wikipedia. The latest archived version is from 4 March 2016 where they still did not have the text. Maybe they copied from us, or maybe Bartamina added the text in multiple places. A Google search found other copies including which is dated in 2013 so it appears we cannot use the text without evidence that Bartamina has the copyright. It's very promotional anyway and would need a rewrite. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:35, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
I've speedy deleted the article. It's also a heavy promo, doesn't have independent third-party sources and doesn't say why she is notable, so fails on G12, G11 and A7 Jimfbleak - talk to me? 13:38, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
@Jimfbleak: That seems strict for a 12 year old article with many contributors. It wasn't so promotional before the 2014 copying. Would you consider to restore without the copied material and use WP:PROD or WP:AFD? I get 152 Google News hits on "Amina Figarova" but haven't examined their quality. PrimeHunter, I've restored the 2 September 2012 version, before Bartamina had really got going. It seems never to have had proper RS sources, and there is nothing i the article suggesting notability, so I've AfDed as suggested Jimfbleak - talk to me? 14:12, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

It's only an assamption that it could be Amina's husband. Anyone can name his account like that. So, if the material is promotional, but not copirighted as you mentioned above (the source added the text after Wikipedia) and if it's also possible to get some new reliable sources why not to rewrite it sorting old info and adding new from RS? PrimeHunter (talk), could you please share new sources you found? Let's disscuss it. I would be very thankful for mutial work on the article. It would be a nice contribution to Wikipedia as all we are here for this purpose only Lidiia Kondratieva (talk) 17:26, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
I mentioned above that I found another site which contained the material before it was added to Wikipedia. It would have to be rewritten to be used, both to avoid copyright violation and be less promotional. The "Find sources:" list at top of Amina Figarova and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Amina Figarova looks for the type of sources Wikipedia often likes. The article should satisfy Wikipedia:Notability (music) or Wikipedia:Notability (people). PrimeHunter (talk) 21:32, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

Pings are caused by a wikilink to the userpage so your signature would ping yourself if it was possible. That would be pretty annoying. {{Hidden ping}} makes the link on a zero-width space so it can normally not be seen or clicked but it's still there in the html. Would be a reliable source when creating the article, Order Bursovaginoidea? The article would mostly contain a list of the species in that order, but before creating a draft for the article, I would like to make sure that it would be okay to use the website as a reference. Good advice. There are other reliable sources you could also cite, too, such as the WoRMS database (see here) and the NHM (see here). Glad to be of help, SkyGazer 512. There are plenty of other key sources you might want to be aware of, like the IUCN Red List, the International Plant Name Index (IPNI), Index Kewensis, and so on. Its often worth seeing what othere related article pages have used, or consider joining one of the WikiProjects relayed to a particular group. Be aware, too, that accepted classification systems for individual groups do also vary over time, so, especially amongst obscure taxa, you may find different naming systems, so be alert for synonyms, as well as redundant group names. Hello Dagmar, I have removed 'positively' from the mention of newspaper reviews as it was unsourced. The article was begun in mid-2017 so the publication of the book may have 'sparked' its creation. However, it was written by an editor with several years experience and a large edit history. IMO It is reasonably factual and neutral. Eagleash (talk) 17:01, 21 January 2018 (UTC)
I have to ask, is Dagmar your real name? Apart from the pub in EastEnders (famously torched by Dirty Den in the late '80s) and other real-world hotels and bars, the only time I've heard the name applied to a person is in Frank Zappa's "Broken Hearts Are For Assholes" from Sheik Yerbouti (one of the best albums ever made). Language translate.[edit]

Hello, I'm a french user and I want to translate some page which have not been translate in my language. For exemple: " Hopeless Fountain Kingdom " an album by Halsey is only in english and a few other languages. I want to translate this page in french but I can't. Can I have help? @ColinFine: As far as I can understand, Unwayy wants to translate enwiki article Hopeless Fountain Kingdom to frwiki. Alas I can't help in translation (I don't speak French). American or British spelling[edit]

I saw an article that had the word "realise" in it, and I changed it to "realize," before I remembered that the spelling in British English is different than that of Americans. Most articles, I've noticed, use American spelling. Does this mean that American English spelling should be used rather than British English spelling?--SkyGazer 512 talk / contributions / subpages 16:39, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

The policy is at WP:ENGVAR. Spelling should be consistent within any one article, and articles on American topics will normally have American spelling (and similar fro British), but otherwise it is best to leave the spelling as it is. In cases of disagreement, the first use of a variety of spelling should be retained. In the case of your last edit, American spelling was appropriate for consistency within the article. @SkyGazer 512: I'd like to add that in British English that word can actually be spelled (or spelt) realise or realize, with the latter being much more prevalent. I personally prefer using -ize, known as Oxford spelling. Most Brits who shun such things, in my experience, do so only because they assume -ize is an Americanism (and it's fashionable to think we're somehow better than "the yanks" when it comes to language, notwithstanding the fact that most of us have never heard of Oxford spelling). nagualdesign 18:23, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

I learnt the rules of Oxford spellings many years ago, but they are falling out of fashion. Most schools now teach the "ise" endings in the UK (though I expect someone will know of exceptions). Dbfirs 23:05, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

Where is the list of words used on WP not defined in Wiktionary[edit]

At one point, there was a project on this wiki to find words that were used in Wikipedia articles but that did not exist as Wiktionary entries, on the theory that such words were likely to be either misspellings to be changed here, or valid words that Wiktionary would want to add. How to ensure other Wikipedians are notified?[edit]

Hi, how can I make sure other Wikipedians get a notification when I reply to a message they have left on my talk page? Or if I want to mention & notify them on a different page like an article's talk page?

You can also use the colon in front of your text to notify someone. Ramesty (talk) 23:37, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

Why are there so many pedias? I've heard of Wikipedia, Simple English Wikipedia, a Mario Pedia, and some others?Ramesty (talk) 23:36, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

The suffix -pedia means related to learning and is known from encyclopedia. Many online encyclopedias and similar websites have chosen a name with suffix -pedia. But your example "Mario Pedia" is not actually called Mariopedia so I wonder whether your question was serious. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:00, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

No. Many websites have wiki or pedia in the name without being affiliated with Wikipedia. A wiki is just a type of website, and "pedia" in a name just hints that a site may be an encyclopedia or other learning resource. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:26, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
"Wikipedia" is a registered trademark so a site with Wikipedia in the name is either the official website Wikipedia (or a part of it), or the site is violating the trademark. No notable sites do that. There are around 300 language editions of Wikipedia. The simple English Wikipedia is one of them. The English Wikipedia (this site is another. When people say "Wikipedia" while speaking English, they often mean the English Wikipedia. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:36, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

Some of those statistics are incredible. The English Wikipedia has over 125k active users and 5.555 million articles. The Cebuano language, which I've never even heard of, has 5.383 million articles, and they managed that with just 1/48th the number of edits we took... The Cebuano Wikipedia has few readers and almost no editors. Nearly all articles were made by Lsjbot and have never been edited by a human. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:51, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
I would have guessed that many of them were made via machine translation, otherwise the 150 active users must have been incredibly busy. The Lsjbot article is interesting too. About Global IPBE unable to edit via Tor Browser[edit]

Hi everyone, I am 1233. I want to have a quick question about the problem which occurs over me: I am currently holding a global IPBE, which enables me to bypass TOR lock. However, I am unable to do so, which makes me be restricted to contribute to this wiki. I want to know if Tor exit nodes are double banned locally in English Wikipedia? --1233Talk 05:13, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

Hello 1233, I may be wrong but I notice in your global account info that you belong to the ip-block exempt group only at and not on I suspect that having the global ip-block exempt right does not automatically add you to the English Wikipedia's ip-block exempt group (the "group" is different from the "right"). It's only when you get added to the ip-block exempt group that you get the additional torunblocked right. For example, administrators on the English Wikipedia have automatic ip block exempt rights, but do not have the torunblocked rights, so cannot use TOR browsers for editing, unless they separately request for being added to the ip-block exempt group. In summary, simply apply for the rights here using the procedure described at Wikipedia:IP block exemption#Used for anonymous proxy editing, mentioning that you already have been added to the ip-block exempt group at But of course, other editors here may have clearer answers for you. In the meanwhile, try to do some test edits through a fresh browser (or after clearing the cookies in your current browser) just to be sure you're not being stopped by a cookie block. A lot of Tor proxies (but by no means all) are locally blocked both as Tor and for a variety of other reasons. You will not be able to edit from these "double-banned" IPs without a local exemption. You can tell if this is the case when you try to edit - whether you see MediaWiki:Torblock-blocked or some other block message. If it's some other message then try changing IP and editing from a different exit node (a few times). -- zzuuzz (talk) 14:09, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

Editing the Film page for STILL (film)[edit]

Hi there,

I work for the production company that made STILL (film).

I wanted to add some film festivals and additional reviews and also to possibly replace the synopsis which at the moment is far too long.

Over the weekend we had someone add some of the festivals that our film had been to, but these were deleted, why is that?

@Blunt stuff: There are messages at your talk page which go some way to explaining the situation as do the edit summaries left by other editors. However, in brief, the edits were removed because listing multiple festivals at which a film has been shown is not considered conventional practice. Moreover, the edits were promotional, removed negative reviews and also (perhaps most importantly) contained copyright violations. You also need to read WP:PAID and WP:COI and make the necessary disclosures. This is not optional you must do this if you wish to resume editng once the block has expired. I would however like to add some more of the positive ones. We were merely wanting to make the page a little more reflective of the reception the film had received as our reviews. Our positive to negative ratio was more along the lines of 70:30 in terms of critic reviews. However, I do appreciate your notes. I did not realise that listing festivals was outside of the norm. Are we allowed to list awards as per other pages that have done the same eg

(edit conflict)There are automated scripts that are used to go through articles looking for spelling errors, but they can't find them all, so when you see a spelling error, just correct it, but beware of changing from one variety of English to another because this is usually unhelpful. Question about uploading free images that came from another websites.[edit]

So I have a question. Does free images from another websites can be uploaded on Wikipedia? Many images are taken using a camera and uploaded on another website by others. How do you know that the photographs are not copyright? Usually the photographer will own the copyright. Dbfirs 14:16, 22 January 2018 (UTC)
PhinbellaMedia, copyrighted text and images are not allowed in Wikipedia, as outlined in this policy. Images are considered copyright unless they state clearly and explicitly that they are public domain, or are verifiable as so old that they are out of copyright. Copyright images can only be used if their copyright status is clearly marked as CC BY-SA 3.0 or equivalent which allows free distribution use and modificationfor any purpose including commercial. The copyright holder may choose to release the work into the public domain or to release it under a liberal license, but only by making an explicit declaration. No. The criteria for a Wikipedia article are at WP:Notability, and you would also need to read the advice at WP:Your first article, and the advice against autobiography. Your page is also not suitable as a user page. --David Biddulph (talk) 15:26, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

The name of Folketeateret is not spelled correct. How do I change it.[edit]

I represent the owner of Folketeateret in Oslo. The main name of the article is not correctly spelled. There is a theatre in Copenhagen that is called Folketeatret, but we are Folketeateret. The incorrect spelling of our nam here at Wikipedia also leads to incorrect spelling on Googlemaps etc.

How du I change the main name of the article?

Is it possible?[edit]

Is it even possible to send thanks to an edit done by an IP address? It looks like you can only send thanks to an edit done by someone who has registered an account... If it isn't possible, why can't I do it? I found many edits done by IP addresses that I wanted to send thanks to but I can't do it... VibeScepter (talk) (contributions) 20:07, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

@VibeScepter: According to WP:THANK it only works for registered users. You could leave a thank you message on the IP editor's talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 20:28, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

If you're referring to edits that you discover some time after they've been made, there's little point in thanking the editor in question – making edits to improve articles is why most of us come here in the first place. Page on The Spitz[edit]

This page erroneously quotes “Roland Pietsch” as “venue manager”. I worked with Roland for years and he was a part time bartender who helped with the banking once a week. I was The Spitz’s Venue Manager for years - I changed it from being a venue with the occasional outside promotion to over 10 in-house promotions per month and shows 7 days a week on two floors. I booked all the bands listed on the Wikipedia page, except one or two. I put on 4 festivals per year and booked over 1000 bands per year at the Spitz during this time. I was VM from 2002 til 2008, and before me it was Joel Mills. It’s not important in terms of ego but it was extremely hard work and had nothing to do with Roland - credit where credit’s due and all that, and I do think historically accurate articles are preferred. Does original research apply to art?[edit]

I'm not aware of policies here about that, but is it allowed to add examples (pictures ) of painting techniques in articles treating them? Most of the artist works are finished, thought that it would be interesting to have previous steps (which highlight those techniques). If they're from someone I know, would they be allowed? I'm not quite sure what you have in mind, but generally graphics are given a looser rein than text. If you create a map to show the range of a species or a diagram to illustrate how something works, that's generally OK if there are no other issues Jimfbleak - talk to me? 06:44, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

I'm not sure that I understand the question. If you create an image to show how impasto is used, I can't imagine what policy could prevent you from using it in Wikipedia. But if you take a photograph of an incomplete work by another artist to show such a technique, the artist would still have copyright in it. Maproom (talk) 08:10, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

If your intended recipient has enabled email, you'll see an "Email this user" link from the left-hand toolbar on the user's talk page. If I am editing articles which needs citation [citation needed] and I come across the source which bears the information on this topic should I add a link to it?
